News : Topics : Cash Machines Cash machines have played their part in reducing the number of bank branches, making your money accessible 24 hours a day from thousands of locations across the country. While cash machines operated by major banks and building societies are usually free to use, the number of 'convenience' ATMs which charge a fee are increasing rapidly, and are expected to overtake the free-to-use ones over the next few years. Fee-charging cash machines are controversial, both because many experts say that they do not make the charges clear enough, and also because of the level of the charge. Many machines operate a fixed fee of around £1.50 or £1.75 however much money is withdrawn, which works out to be a very high rate when only small amounts of cash are needed.
