Tesco Moving Into Mortgages?

Tesco Personal Finance is considering offering mortgages and remortgages

21st September 2004

Tesco Personal Finance is to consider offering mortgages and remortgages to its millions of supermarket customers, according to reports in the Times newspaper.

The company, which already operates a successful personal finance business including loans, insurance and credit cards, is reported to be planning to discuss expanding its range to include home loans at its next board meeting in October.

There are doubts, however, about whether mortgages are a suitable product for supermarket retailers to offer - it is a highly regulated and complex area, and competitor Sainsbury's has recently dropped property financing from its range.
