Tesco Considers Selling Property Online

The supermarket and personal finance giant Tesco considers selling property online

17th May 2005

The Grocer magazine reports that Tesco is considering selling property online, and is in talks with an internet developer to see whether this is viable.

The tentative plans follow the supermarket's successful expansion into the personal finance market, and entering the property sales market would give opportunities to cross-sell with its insurance and mortgage product range.

The company is also understood to be keen to take advantage of consumer dissatisfaction with estate agents, following a number of recent exposes and scandals in that industry. The size of Tesco's customer base would also allow it to undercut estate agents quite easily.

A spokesperson for Tesco said that it had no current plans to sell property, but that it was always considering ways to expand the range of services it offers to its customers.
