9th June 2004

The latest survey by the Halifax shows that property price rises continue unabated, and may even be accelerating. Prices rose by 2.2% in May, compared to 1.8% in April, and the average house price is now £158,000.

Prices rose most in Wales and the northern regions of England, while the market in the south of England is showing signs of new life after a slowdown in 2003.

The Bank of England will announce its decision on interest rates on Thursday, when it is expected that rates will rise again.
