Possible Higher Taxes for Second Homes

Owners of second homes could face higher council tax charges

18th April 2006

New proposals could see Britain's 328,000 second home owners paying higher tax, in a bid to alleviate the shortage of affordable rural housing.

Owners of second homes have already seen a 50% council tax relief on empty properties ended, and while local authorities can currently charge up to 90% of standard council tax on second homes, the Commission for Rural Communities has propsed that second homes could be charged at a higher rate than first homes.

The proposals are now being considered by the Affordable Rural Housing Commission, and a decision is expected next month.
