1st June 2005
A report by insurance company Prudential has revealed some disturbing figures on the extent of pensioner poverty.
According to the research, while around 2 million pensioners are being forced by low income to cut back on holidays and leisure activities, a worringly high number were trying to cut back on essentials too.
Prudential says 1.7m are trying to cut back on clothing costs, 1.2m worrying about heating bills, and possibly most worryingly, nearly 750,000 pensioners were cutting back on food and over 400,000 trying to reduce medical fees.
The report also says that 1 in ten pensioners now live on less than £5,000 a year, while nearly 25% have incomes under £7,500.
It also estimates that 1.2 million pensioners have had to return to some kind of work to make ends meet.
