Over Half of UK Adults Have No Pensions Provision

Survey shows half of people have no company or private pension scheme

26th July 2004

A new survey by human resources company Accenture has revealed an alarming lack of pension provision for UK adults.

Nearly half of those surveyed admitted to having no private or company scheme, with a common reason given being that they felt they couldn't afford to make the payments.

Almost a third of the under-35s questioned said they believed they were too young to be thinking about a pension, while even at the upper age range - those of 55 or over - a third had no independant provision.

Accenture's Andrew Middleton urged employers to educate their staff about the need for a pension, and said:

'If this trend continues, Britain will be a nation of poverty pensioners, or, worse still, people will be forced to continue to work through their seventies.'
