Calls for Fairer Pensions for Women
Two pressure groups have called for pensions overhaul
22nd April 2005
Two pressure groups, Age Concern and the Fawcett Society, have called for pensions reform to make a fairer deal for women.
As the pension system is based on National Insurance contributions, many women don't qualify for a full pension as they've had broken employment records through childrearing. It's estimated that 20% of single female pensioners live in poverty because of this.
The proposals for reform include basing a 'citizen's pension' on residency rather than insurance contributions.
