Official Baby Bonds Launch

Today sees the formal launch of the Child Trust Fund

11th January 2005

Gordon Brown is officially launching the Child Trust Fund, or 'Baby Bond', scheme today.

Intended to encourage savings, the program will give a voucher worth at least £250 to every child born since September 2002, to be invested in a special investment account which matures when the child reaches 18.

Additional tax-free payments of up to £1200 per year can be put into the accounts.

Vouchers will be sent out from next week, while the accounts will be available from April.
