Winter Sports Insurance
If you're going on a skiing or other winter sports holiday this winter, you'll need to make sure you're properly insured. A standard travel insurance policy will probably not give you adequate levels of cover, and if things go wrong you could be left facing a huge bill.
Injury
Skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports carry a greater risk of injury than lying quietly on a beach, soaking up the sun. Something as small as a twisted ankle or a heavy fall may well need medical attention, however slight. If you need medical care after a winter sports accident, and you didn't have the cover option, you'll almost certainly have to pay up yourself - and it's not likely to be cheap.
If you're unlucky enough to need a mountain rescue, the bill will run into thousands of pounds before you even get to hospital - this is unlikely to be covered on a standard policy, but will be under winter sports insurance.
Gear
Winter sports need equipment, and usually expensive equipment at that. If your stuff is nicked, you'll get replacements or cash if you've chosen the winter sports cover option. Even hired equipment may need to be insured, and if your policy doesn't cover it you might have to fork out for an expensive policy from the hire company.
Liability
However skilled you are, and however careful you are, there's always the chance that you could be involved in an accident where someone else gets injured. If this happens, you could be sued. Even if you're not at fault, this is an expensive process, so make sure your insurance includes personal liability and legal cover.
Piste Closure
If bad weather means you can't ski, many policies will pay compensation for this - especially if you've pre-booked lessons or prepaid piste fees.
Off Piste
If you inted to go off piste, make sure your policy will cover you for this. Basic winter sports cover probably excludes this, even if you go off-piste accidentally.
