Pensioners' Difficulty Arranging Travel Insurance

Over-70s excluded from up to two thirds of travel insurance policies

25th October 2005

Research by the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has highlighted the difficulties facedby pensioners trying to arrange travel insurance cover.

Of the 140 annual policies on the market, 30 specifically exclude people over 65 from their cover, a figure that rises to 105 or 75% for the over-70s.

Travellers over 70 may find it easier to arrange single trip cover than annual, but even so around two thirds of policies are still unavailable to them.

A spokeswoman for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that while they had no policy on their members offering cover to older travellers, there were specialist providers such as Age Concern and Saga which should ensure that people could get cover whatever their age.
