Insurance from Travel Agents Often Overpriced and Inadequate

Consumer group Which says buying insurance from travel agents is often a mistake

7th July 2006

Consumer group Which has warned that travel insurance policies bought from travel agents as part of a holiday package are often overpriced and inadequate, and that basic procedures for correctly selling policies weren't being followed.

Undercover researchers posing as holiday buyers found that none of the travel agents they contacted ensured that the cover sold was suitable by explaining what was covered, what was excluded, and by asking about pre-existing medical conditions.

Policies were also generally more expensive than comparable ones bought from banks and insurance companies.

Neil Fowler of Which said that there was no reason why travel agents shouldn't be following insurance industry regulations, and that people should enjoy the 'same protection and peace of mind on holiday regardless of where they've bought their travel insurance'.
