The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

The European Health Insurance Card or EHIC is the new way to ensure you can get medical treatment while travelling in Europe. It replaces the old E111 forms, which became invalid from 1st January 2006 onwards.

What does it provide?

The card entitles you to any medical treatment that becomes neccessary during your trip, at either a reduced cost or for free, so long as that treatment isn't the main purpose of your trip.

It is an arrangement between the governments of the countries who participate in the scheme, and effectively grants a visitor to a country the same rights to state-funded medical treatment as that country's citizens.

Where is EHIC valid?

EHIC is valid in the European Economic Area which consists of the EU, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Switzerland also has an arrangement with the EU which means the EHIC can be used there.

Do I still need travel insurance?

Although EHIC removes or lessens the need to take out insurance against medical bills, travel insurance is still advisable for most travellers.

While most state-provided treatment is covered by the card, many countries don't offer as much free treatment as the NHS in the UK, and you may end up facing bills for aspects of medical treatment not covered by the card.

For example, if you're travelling to participate in winter sports and have an accident that requires transport to hospital, you may face a large bill - often the transport will be provided privately by the resort rather than by the health service, and will come with a charge.

A comprehensive travel insurance policy will guarantee that all medical expenses are covered, whatever treatment you require.

Travel insurance also offers more than simple medical cover, for example cover against loss or theft of your possessions or money, and for this reason shouldn't be overlooked when planning your trip.

Where can I get a card?

UK residents can apply for the card online at www.ehic.org.uk, and the card is usually delivered to you within 7 days. You can also apply by telephone or by post - see the EHIC site for further details.
