19% of Travel Insurance Claims are Falsified

19 per cent of British travel insurance claims are false

14th April 2005

Insurer Direct Line has said they are committed to clamping down on fraud, after research showed that 19% of travel insurance claims are falsified. The company says that dishonest claims ultimately push up the premiums for honest customers.

The report said that 13% of claimants inflated the value of their claim, while 5% claimed fictitious items were stolen or lost.

15% of dishonest claimants excused their actions by saying they needed the money, while in the general public 22% believed they were owed something by their insurance company because they had never made a claim.

The top 3 items included in false claims were cameras, cash and clothes, with designer sunglasses and Ipods also making appearances.
