Dog owners forced to shell out because of poor kennel standards
31st March 2006
Insurance company Direct Line have started a campaign to regulate kennels after research suggests that poor standards are responsible for a collective cost of £46m in vet's bills over the lifetime of dog-owners pets.
Of the 5.5m or so dogs in the UK, around 300,000 have had to visit a vet after staying in a kennels, at an average cost of £150 each.
12% of dogs who stayed in kennels had contracted an illness there at least once in their lives, and 4% had sustained an injury.
Peter Eastwick-Field, a leading vet, commented:
"We believe too many boarding establishments are falling below acceptable standards in basic care... On average we see 1-2 dogs a week in the practice during the summer months as a result of time spent in the kennels."
Direct Line provide a range of insurance services, including pet insurance for dogs and cats.
