Norwich Union to use new flood-risk assessment system

New technology will allow better assessment of flood risk for 600,000 homes

3rd March 2004

Insurance company Norwich Union is to use a new system to assess flood risk, which will effect over 600,000 properties in high-risk areas.

Previously, the risk of a property being flooded was based on postcode bands, with no account being taken of the individual property's height or other factors.

The new system relies on a 'flood map' of the UK and allows each property to be assessed individually, taking into account its height, position, and past frequency of flooding.

The system is to be used in Norfolk and Shropshire at first, before expanding to cover all areas by the end of 2004.
