Warning of Flood Risk Complacency
Environment Agency warns of consumer complacency about flood risks and insurance
13th October 2005
A report by the Environment Agency has revealed that out of the 2 million households in flood risk areas, as many as 41% were unaware of the danger.
Worse, 34% of people at risk had not checked to make sure their home insurance covered damage or loss caused by flooding, and only 7% had found out how to get flood warnings.
Baroness Young, the Environment Agency's chief executive, said that while there was no way to stop flooding from happening, being better prepared could reduce the impact and may also help reduce insurance premiums by demonstrating that preparations had been made to reduce the probable costs of any claims.
Prior to 2002, insurance companies had been obliged to provide cover for flood risk properties, but this is no longer the case, and decisions on policies are now made on a case by case basis.
