Reprieve for Cheaper Female Insurance

Insurance industry exempted from forthcoming EU Gender Directive

4th January 2005

The threat to low cost female insurance by the European Gender Directive has been lifted, as a deal has been struck to exempt the insurance industry.

Traditionally, women could expect to pay less for insurance as they tended to be involced in less serious accidents, and so were less of a risk than men.

The forthcoming Euro directive requires that gender can not be used to discriminate in the provision of services, which would have meant that womens premiums would have had to rise to match mens, but the British government claims that it has negotiated an exemption for insurance policies.
