EU Directive to Raise Insurance Premiums?
Anti-discrimination directive may bring discounted female car insurance to an end
18th January 2004
Moves by the European Commission to curb gender discrimination outside the workplace could have the effect of raising insurance premiums for both men and women.
Europe's social affairs commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou claims that using a person's gender in the calculation of premiums is 'abhorrent' and has drafted a directive to outlaw the practice.
As women are statistically less likely than men to be involved in car accidents, many insurers will offer lower premiums to women drivers than men - this would no longer be allowed if the directive is enforced.
Similarly, as men generally die younger than women, their pension and life insurance payouts tend to be more generous - again, this is at risk from the new directive.
