Motorists Count Cost of Car Vandalism
Research shows vandalism of cars is widespread
3rd OCtober 2005
Research by insurance company Direct Line suggests that 1 in 7 cars have been vandalised in the last year, with a total annual cost of £1.3bn.
More than half of the incidents, which ranged from the car being 'keyed' to more substantial damage such as slashed tyres, were not reported to the police as the victims did not feel any action would result.
Overall, 60% of motorists have suffered vandalism of their vehicles at some point, with the result that 79% now worry about where they leave their car, with multi storey car parks and train stations seens as particularly risky places to park.
Direct Line say that vandalism is a growing concern, and while many may think that inner cities and car parks are the most risky places to leave a car, most incidents occur in quiet streets away from lighting.
