The newly launched car insurance database has claimed it's first fraudster scalp
The car insurance fraud database recently launched by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has claimed its first scalp by identifying a fraudster who claimed twice on the same vehicle for the same reason.
The database consists of merged data held by individual insurance companies combined with information stored on the police national computer, and was set up to help reduce motor insurance fraud which costs the industry up to £500m a year.
The first fraudster to be exposed claimed that his car was stolen and stripped down before being found - which, coincidentally happened to the same owner of the same vehicle 6 years ago.
A survey of insurers has found that 85% think that the new system will trap any attempts at fraud, while 61% of claims staff using the system had already found anomalous claims that needed further investigation.
