British Drivers Average 20 Breakdowns

Research from Direct Line estimates likelihood of breaking down

20th June 2005

Research from insurance company Direct Line has estimated that the average British driver will experience 20 breakdowns over the course of their driving life.

The most common reason for a woman driver to break down was a flat tyre, affecting 28%, compared to 32% of men breaking down because of a flat battery.

8% of women's breakdowns are simply down to running out of petrol - but before men start to feel smug, they're even more likely to run out, with 12% of men's breakdowns being caused this way.

The research also found that 25% of women would feel uneasy if a fellow motorist stopped to offer assistance.
