Underwriter

An Underwriter is the company or institution that must pay you when you make a successful insurance claim, i.e. it is the company who actually insures you.

Although your insurance policy may have been bought off a large high street name, they are not necessarily the company providing the insurance : they may have acted as brokers between you and the underwriter.
