Intestate

If someone dies without making a will, that person is said to have died intestate.

This can cause difficulties in that the surviving spouse or immediate family does not automatically inherit the deceased's assets - the assets are distributed according to the laws of Intestacy, a process that can take months or years, leaving a large part of the estate frozen for the period.
