Dividend

A dividend is a payment made to a shareholder of a publically traded company, and it represents a share in the profits of that company.

Not every company will pay a dividend - it may have a policy of reinvesting all profits, or it may have traded at a loss that year. The company's dividend policy must be published publically.

A dividend is often expressed in terms of a yield.
