Brokers
Brokers are simply intermediaries who bring customers and service providers together.
In the case of personal loans and mortgages, they are the connection between the borrower and the lender. They will deal with the admin side of your loan application, and as they usually have a large panel of lenders available, they can offer a variety of loans for different circumstances.
The term is also used in insurance, where the broker will get quotes from a variety of insurers on behalf of the customer in order to get the lowest deal.
Stockbrokers are another example. In that case, they are the intermediary between the customer and the stockmarket, buying and selling shares on an investor's behalf.
