AMEX
AMEX is a commonly used abbreviation of American Express, the financial company who are most famous for providing credit cards and charge cards, but who also offer other services such as travel insurance, travellers cheques, and the recently launched travellers cheque card.
The company launched its first charge card in 1958 and quickly became established, with over a million cards being issued over the following 5 years.
American Express is one of the few remaining credit card issuers to operate outside of the Visa or Mastercard systems.
