British Punters Bet £1.5bn Online

Survey estimates the British online gambling market is worth £1.5bn a year

3rd October 2005

A survey for Virgin Money has estimated that UK punters bet £1.5bn a year online.

The poll of 2,000 people found that betting on football, lottery, horseracing and poker / casino sites was more popular than expected with up to 93% of respondents admitting to having tried it at least once.

While most gamblers said they spent £10-£20 a week on their pastime, Londoners were the nation's high rollers with some spending up to £500 a week.

A spokesman for Virgin Money commented:

"There's no doubt online gambling and betting has become incredibly popular across the country - and these figures prove it. The internet - as with so many other areas of life - has simply made something people already enjoy even easier to access and new sites are springing up all the time. Gambling can be both fun and rewarding but punters should only spend what they can afford to lose."
