Taxman Seeks 'Police Powers'
HMRC seeks new powers in tax investigations
15th August 2006
HM Revenue & Customs is seeking a wide range of new powers for its investigators, vastly reducing the need for police involvement in criminal tax evasion cases.
If the new powers are granted, possibly next year, then the taxman will be able to arrest fraud suspects, take fingerprints, conduct premises searches and place people on bail.
The new measures would grant similar powers as those already enjoyed by customs officers, and many have expected the changes since the Inland Revenue and HM Customs were merged last year.
