Ombudsman Criticises Tax Credits
Inland Revenue Ombudsman upholds 86% of tax credit complaints
23rd June 2005
The troubled tax credits system has come under renewed fire from the Inland Revenue Ombudsman, who described the system as "still not working well" and causing "worry and distress" to vulnerable people through errors leading to clawbacks.
The adjudicator also revealed that complaints about tax credits have risen by 48% over the year, and that 86% of complaints were upheld.
The ombudsman said that in many cases, Revenue staff were being "thwarted" by inflexible systems, that made it too hard to rectify mistakes quickly.
The report comes after the Inland Revenue released figures showing 455,000 overpayments were made because of a software error, with many receivers of tax credits now facing substantial bills for repayment.
