Self Assessment Deadline
Automatic fines will be issued if today's deadline is missed
31st January 2005
Today is the final deadline for filing and paying self assessment tax returns for the year 2003/4.
Should you fail to file by midnight tonight, there will be an automatic fine of £100 and your tax bill will start to attract interest at 7.5%. Miss a further deadline of 28th February, and you'll be stung with a 5% levy of your total bill, with another 5% if you've still not paid by the end of July.
Amidst reports that the Inland Revenue's web site is overwhelmed and not accepting online filing - the Revenue denies there's a problem - people who have not yet filed are urged to hand deliver their returns to their local tax office, many of which are staying open to 8pm tonight.
