ABI Questions Claim Lawyers Effectiveness
Association of British Insurers says lawyers may not help in personal injury compensation claims
12th July 2006
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) have raised doubts about whether people seeking injury compensation should hire a law firm to help with their claim.
The ABI says that injury claims on car insurance policies take an average of 90 days longer when a lawyer is involved, while claims against an employer will see much lower compensation levels.
They also claim that even though a lawyer may get you a higher payout on a public liability policy, it will take much longer to get a result.
These findings have prompted the ABI to call for a more streamlined claims procedure for 'genuine claimants' with less legal argument involved. Currently 76% of claimants use the services of a lawyer.
Personal injury lawfirm Irwin Mitchell dispute the ABI's comments however, with a partner at the lawyers practice pointing out that the insurance industry would enjoy greater profits if legal costs could be removed, and that this fact raised doubts over the credibility of the statistics.
