Millions Dream of Lottery Winnings Rather Than Save

Survey shows 33% of adults prefer to spend £5 a week on the lottery

3rd January 2005

A survey by Mintel has shown that one in three adults, or 16 million, would prefer to spend £5 a week on the lottery in the hope of winning the jackpot, rather than saving it for the future in a high street savings account.

The result was part of a larger survey on the public's attitudes to the finance industry, and suggests that the trust factor needs to be worked on following a recent spate of mis-selling and other scandals.

Another notable result was that 17% have formally complained over a mis-selling incident, with another 7% saying they planned to complain in the near future.

7% have made it as far as receiving compensation after making a complaint.

Mintel's senior finance analyst, Paul Davies, commented:

"The image of the industry has clearly been tarnished by the wave of mis-selling scandals that have hit the headlines in recent years. Many people clearly still need reassurance when it comes to financial advice from providers and the industry needs to continue to work on rebuilding confidence amongst a significant proportion of the population"
