Inflation Rises to 1.9%

Inflation rises in March but stays within government target

20th April 2005

Inflation rose to 1.9% in March according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The figure, measured using the government's preferred CPI method, is up from 1.6% in February, but remains below the government target of 2%.

The ONS said that prices rises in petrol, food and air fares accounted for part of the rise.

Analysts are divided as to whether the latest rise will put pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates to help cool down the economy.
