9 Million Britons are Financial Phobics

A fifth of the population experience psychological difficulties in dealing with their finances

30th January 2003

A report commissioned by online bank Egg claims to have unearthed a new psychological condition, dubbed Financial Phobia.

Up to a fifth of the population suffers from it, rendering them incapable of coping with their finances with the same competency they handle the rest of their lives.

Symptoms include a dread of opening bank statements, bills and other finance-related post, and a tendency to 'let things slide' rather than keeping on top of their finances.

The condition was usually caused by a financial trauma such as losing money on an investment, getting into debt or meeting with poor service from a bank.
