European Cross-border Financial Services Plan

It should soon become easier to use financial services based in other European countries

A new green paper launched by the European internal market commissioner Charlie McCreevy suggests at plans to open up cross-border financial services.

While Europe is in theory a single market, local regulations make it difficult and long winded to - for example - open a savings account in Spain if you are a UK citizen.

Mr McCreevy indicated that the commission would consider legislation to enable consumers to shop for financial services around the union, but has stressed that extra regulation would only be used if there was a clear benefit for both business and consumers.
