Move to Simplify Bills

British Standards Institution releases new voluntary rules to simplify utility and mobile phone bills

21st October 2005

A new set of voluntary rules have been issued aimed at making utility bills easier to understand, after consumer complaints that many bills were too confusing.

The new guidelines, drawn up by the British Standards Institution (BSI) include requirements such as making it clear exactly how much a consumer owes, and over what period the charges have been made.

As well as applying to energy bills, the guidelines are also appropriate for mobile phone and internet bills according to BSI.

The rules are entirely voluntary, but energy minister Malcolm Wicks said that adopting the guidelines would bring 'substantial benefits' to both industry and the consumer by streamlining the billing process.
