MPs' Gas Prices Enquiry
Select Committee to examine recent 10% gas price rise
17th September 2004
MPs are to launch an enquiry into UK gas prices, following an average 10% rise. The latest rise has plunged an estimated 500,000 households into 'fuel poverty' - defined as spending 10% or more of income on energy.
The Trade and Industry Select Committee is to formulate the initial terms of reference for its enquiry on 12th October, but it's thought that it will focus on wholesale prices, which are blamed by the industry for price hikes.
Consumer watchdog Energywatch welcomed the enquiry, saying that they want to see "a light shone on the murky world of wholesale gas supply".
