5.3m People Throw Coins Away

25% of Britons would be happy to see copper coins withdrawn from circulation

A survey by financial services company Prudential reveals that a quarter of the population would support withdrawing copper coinage from circulation, rounding prices up or down to the nearest 5p.

Indeed, such is the public's perception of small change's value, around 5.3m people actually throw it away rather than spending or saving it.

There are around £225m worth of copper coins in circulation according to the Royal Mint - the value to be found behind the nation's sofas was sadly not revealed.
