Europe Approves Cash for Broadband Development
Money from the European Union and the Welsh Assembly Government to fill rural 'black spots'
1st June 2005
The European Commission has approved an extra subsidy to bridge the 'digital divide' in Wales.
While 98% of the country has broadband coverage, large 'black spots' exist in rural areas where no form of broadband internet access is available.
The new funds, co-financed by Europe and the Welsh Assembly Governmet, were cleared by Brussels as not being anti-competitive, and is expected to complete the £115m project to ensure a nationwide broadband infrastructure is in place by March 2007.
