17th December 2004

Ofcom, the communications watchdog, has told British Telecom that it must reduce the prices it charges rival broadband providers for using their 'local loop' equipment.

The cost of transferring a line from one provider to another will be slashed by 60%, while the cost of a new line will drop by 36%.

For shared access lines - where BT retains the voice-only part of the line while renting out the broadband part, prices will be slashed 70%.
