Amended Bill Would Ban Unsolicited Credit Card Cheques
An amendment to the consumer credit bill would stop credit card issuers sending unsolicited cheques
18th January 2005
MP James Plaskitt has tabled an amendment to the Consumer Credit Bill which would force credit card companies to stop sending unsoplicited cheques to their customers.
The cheques, which allow people to use their credit card in places that don't accept cards, or to pay a cash advance to their bank accounts, usually attract a higher rate of interest than the standard purchase rate.
Consumer groups have complained that the cost of the cheques is not always made clear.
If the amendment is successful, companies would have to seek permission from the cardholder before issuing cheques.
