Shell Suspends Chip and Pin

Petrol company suspends payment by chip and pin after uncovering £1m fraud

8th May 2006

Petrol company Shell has withdrawn the facility to pay by Chip and Pin from its 600 UK petrol stations after uncovering a £1m fraud.

The money was syphoned out of customers accounts, apparently after the pin pads used to input the digits had been tampered with, although the units were supposedly tamper-proof.

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the enquiry being carried out by the Metropolitan Police cheque and plastic crime unit, and the Association of Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) says it is satisfied that the fraud has affected only Shell's outlets.

The company says it plans to reintroduce chip and pin payment as soon as possible, and in the meantime customers can continue to use their cards in the traditional swipe and signature manner.
