Shell Reinstates Chip and PIN

Petrol station users can stop swiping again

4th September 2006

Petrol giant Shell has announced that chip and pin technology is to return to its forecourts, four months after being suspended when a huge fraud was uncovered.

Since the £1m alleged fraud, customers have had to 'swipe and sign' for their credit card purchases in the traditional way.

It is not yet clear why it has taken so long to reinstate the supposedly tamper-proof anti-fraud technology, as revealing details of the fraud and methods used would prejudice any forthcoming trials.
