Plastic Overtakes Cash
UK spending on credit and debit cards has overtaken cash for the first time

Plastic has now overtaken cash in terms of UK spending volume, according to APACS, the trade body for the electronic payments industry.
In 2004, it is estimated that £269bn will have been spent on credit and debit cards, compared to £268bn in cash.
It is the first year where plastic has overtaken cash since the first UK credit card was introduced 40 years ago.
