High Court to Rule on Overseas Purchases
The OFT seeks a clarification of credit card overseas purchase protection
23rd July 2004
The Office of Fair Trading is taking major credit card companies to the High Court in an effort to clarify rules on purchase protection.
If a credit card user buys an item of value using their card, they are entitled to help from their credit card company if their purchase turns out to be faulty, which can result in compensation being paid.
It is unclear, however, whether this protection extends to purchases made overseas. The OFT says it does, some major credit companies says it doesn't, so the OFT is to test the matter in the High Court.
A decision is expected in around a week's time.
