OFT Says Mastercard Charges Too High

The Office of Fair Trading criticises the charges Mastercard makes to retailers

11th November 2004

The Office of Fair Trading has criticised the 'unduly high' transaction charges Mastercard levies on retailers when shoppers pay by card. The costs are inevitably passed on to consumers through higher prices, the preliminary report says.

The OFT have been investigating Mastercard's charges for 4 years and have given it a chance to respond to the report before a final decision is reached in summer 2005.

The OFT have also revealed a similar investigation into the charges of Mastercard rival Visa.
