Morgan Stanley Fixes Security Hole

Password saving allowed potential access to credit card accounts

9th November 2004

Banking giant Morgan Stanley says it has moved quickly to fix a potential security problem affecting its online banking customers.

The developers of its web site had mistakenly allowed users to save their passwords on their PCs, potentially allowing other people using that computer to access their account by typing just the first letter of the password.

Use of the password saving feature should be disabled on sensitive pages like financial sites, and Morgan Stanley say they have now done this.

It should be pointed out that the possibility of unauthorised account access only applied if a) the user had chosen to save their password, and b) other people had access to that computer.
