MBNA Launches Visa Gift Card

MBNA Europe launches UK's first pre-paid Visa Gift Card in partnership with the Trafford Centre

30th June 2005

MBNA Europe has announced the launch of a pre-paid Visa Electron Gift Card, the UK's first, in partnership with Manchester's The Trafford Centre shopping mall.

The card can be used like any other Visa Electron card, the difference being that the card is pre-loaded with a maximum of £250 of funds that are deducted as you spend. This makes it ideal as a gift say MBNA, and it could be seen as a 21st century update of gift vouchers.

The card would also be useful for people without a bank account, who could enjoy the convenience and security of spending with plastic.

Vincent Reboul of MBNA Europe, said:

"The launch of the MBNA gift card represents a significant move in theworld of card payments. Previously, consumers had the choice to pay forgoods or services immediately through cash, cheques or debit cards, orout of future income through credit cards or loans. Now the gift cardallows for pre-payment."
