HFC Email Blunder
HFC Bank inadvertantly reveals customer information
27th September 2004
HFC Bank has made a serious error with a mass email to its customers, leading to their email addresses being publically revealed.
The email, sent to 3 groups of 800 customers, allowed every recipient to see the addresses of the others. The blunder was compounded when out-of-office autoreplies, many containing personal telephone numbers and other sensitive information, began to circulate among the emailed customers.
The mistake has caused an outcry among affected customers, and HFC quickly apologised, blaming simple human error, and paid compensation of £50 to everyone affected.
HFC admitted that the email was illegal under data protection laws, but legal action by the Information Commissioner will not be forthcoming on this occasion.
